One rarely discussed topic is poop unless a baby is concerned. New parents worry about their infants’ bowel movements.

Baby diarrhea can be caused by several reasons ranging from a change in diet to an intestinal infection. Any of the following things can instigate diarrhea in babies. Infection that is caused by virus, bacteria, parasite, allergy on food or sensitivity to medicines, drinking fruit juices, or poisoning can trigger the condition.

In some cases, babies can pick up the viruses or bacteria through their contact with dirty food or drinking water. In addition, they may get bacteria by touching or holding unhygienic surfaces and placing the hands in their mouth.

Washing their hands more often is very vital to stop diarrhea, especially before and after eating, and after going to the bathroom. It is also very important to have a clean and safe bathroom and kitchen surface.

What are the effects of baby diarrhea?

Diarrhea can have an effect on the baby’s normal balance of water and salt. When there is too much water and electrolytes lost in diarrhea, babies can be dehydrated. Dehydration can come about very quickly in babies — within a day or two after the diarrhea sets up and it can be very risky, especially in newborns.

Signs of dehydration in your infant include the following:

• urinating less frequently than usual (fewer wet diapers)

• irritability

• sunken soft spots on the top of the baby’s head

• no tears when crying

• indications of thirst

• parched mouth

• rare sleepiness or lethargy

• skin doesn’t spring back when smoothly pinched and released

If any of the signs of dehydration is evident, call your pediatrician.

How can baby diarrhea be treated?

Doctors usually do not advise over-the-counter anti-diarrhea tablets for children. Nonetheless, the doctor may recommend an antibiotic for a bacterial infection or an anti-parasitic drug for a parasite illness.

Make certain that you work closely with your doctor. If lack of fluids or dehydration becomes rigorous, intravenous fluids may be essential for healing.

You should give your baby an oral rehydration solution (ORS) as this solution is very helpful in treating your baby’s diarrhea.

If your child eats solid foods, your doctor might tell you to switch to bland, starchy foods such as strained bananas, applesauce, and rice cereal until the diarrhea ends. in addition, do not forget to consult your baby’s physician to get the best treatment for your child.

The first guide in determining your baby’s clothing size is by your baby’s weight and length. It can also depend on the type of clothing. Lets assume you want to know what size sleeper your infant should wear, you would want to go by weight. For example 0 – 7 lbs that would be the correct size for your newborn. Some infant clothing are also labeled by how old the baby is, if that’s the case then you would go by how old the baby is. For a newborn size you would look for newborn or 0 – 3 months for the correct size. Note: sleepers are the one baby clothing item that should fit snug.

I would use the same guide when choosing undershirts or pajamas to find the correct size. Because babies vary a lot in size. When finding the correct size for your baby clothing, it is better to go by weight and length of your baby in order to find the correct size.

Sometimes clothing labels only go by how old the child is, like 3 – 6 months or 6 – 9 months. If that is all the information you have to go by, then you need to look at how big it looks and what the clothing is made out of. If it’s 100% cotton then you may want to go a size bigger. Sizes may vary between different brands of clothing. It is better to buy larger because your baby can always grow into it, verses buying to fit, then when you wash it shrinks.

I have learned this lesson the hard way with my first child. I had received several outfits for my son as baby gifts. Because I was a new Mom I waited until my son was big enough to wear them. When I washed them they shrunk. I now give new Mom’s this tip to wash all their baby’s new clothing right away so they won’t have the same problem that I had. So when in doubt buy based on weight and length not age.

When looking for quality clothing material, the top 3 that I suggest are cotton, wool and bamboo. Organic cotton is best when choosing cotton. Wool keeps your baby warm, but also can keep a baby cool. (Most people don’t believe this but it is true). Bamboo is a very soft fabric and feels good on your baby’s skin. Always look for natural fabric when choosing baby clothing. The most important material you must avoid is synthetic material, it is highly flammable. Stay away from scratchy fabric also.

Some safety tips for baby clothing. Stay away from buttons. It is very easy for your child to swallow a button and choke. Strings are also dangerous for children’s clothes. Strings can strangulate a child. Make sure elastic on your baby’s clothing is not to tight causing it to cut off circulation.

Now that you have some good advise on baby’s clothing, go out and have fun shopping.

Do You Consider Day Care the Right Choice for Your Baby?

If you are the parent of a young child and you work or attend a university or technical school, you are doing something to benefit your baby. No guilt allowed. Providing for your child’s care is a necessary and primal aspect of motherhood. It is something you have to do and want to do.

Day care centers have to be licensed by the state. Among the things reviewed by the state are whether there are adequate smoke detectors, the number of bathrooms, whether the bathrooms are sanitary, the ratio of students to teachers and the qualifications of the teachers and other care providers. Acquiring the background and comparative information on the day care center provides a sense of peace of mind. A state licensed site is subject to an objective assessment of the discussed factors and it is far more reliable than a private home of someone you do not know well or at all. Unless you have an option of a relative (parent, grandparent, aunt or close cousin) it is probably best to rely on the commercial center.

There has been a great deal of study on the value of early childhood education. Examine the center for the scope and type of educational materials provided. Look for a center with colorful and geometric play items and a clearly defined academic structure. A child who is able to do rudimentary educational tasks is ahead of the game. Knowing the alphabet, numbers and phonetic reading will be assets for the child as he enters kindergarten. Additionally, socialization of the child in day care is beneficial when the child enters school. A child who has no exposure to a school setting is unfamiliar with the practice of raising a hand to request permission for various activities. This is the child who want to sit in the teacher’s lap and cannot pay attention to class lessons.

Day care schools can have a rather costly tuition. If the cost of such care is prohibitive for you consider a school that has an accommodating sliding scale based on your income. If you are interested in parochial schools, some provide day care. All of these schools are in a position to make recommendations on good day care centers as they will have kindergarteners coming out of such centers. The question of whether day care is a “good choice” is rather anachronistic today. Nearly all babies attend a day care program as nearly all moms are unable to be full time stay-at-home parents. What a lovely thought: stay at home all day with baby entertaining him with a park or a relaxed carriage ride. Who can do that now? Inquire of the supervising agency as to staff and curriculum, safety measures, etc. It will all work out fine!!

As a working mother of four children, I am well aware of the concerns of providing for childcare when both parents work. In most cases, the responsibility of finding, hiring, and supervising the nanny is left to the mother. If the nanny does not come on time, or quits abruptly, or is lacking in some other way, it is usually the mother’s concern and may mean disruption in work schedules for her or both parents. As the mother I was also perpetually concerned about the quality of care given and worried that the nanny was not in any way harming my children. Concerns about stealing and improper behavior in my house while I was away were additional concerns.

As a provider of nannies and household support at Loving Care Inc., I deal with these issues with my clients as well. There are some recommendations that I give to families before and after they hire someone:

1. Check References. When calling the prospective nannies’ references, it is important to ask the right questions. Here are a sample of questions:

- How long did she work for you?
- Why is she no longer employed by you?
- Was she on time every day?
- Was she honest?
- Was there ever a time that she disappointed you?
- Do you still keep in touch with her?
- How did you initially find her?
- What were her specific duties?
- Was she required to do heavy or light housekeeping?
- What ages was your child (children) when she started and when she stopped?
- Knowing what you know now, would you hire her again?
- Did she enjoy interacting with your children?

There are times when the individuals that you are interviewing do not have previous child care references. If they worked in another capacity check those work references. If they have never worked, ask for personal references. You can ask some of the same questions as listed above, adjusting them to their situation. You may still get some very valuable information that will assist you in your decision.

2. When possible, come home unexpectedly. It is important to check on the care, environment and the activities in the home when it is unexpected. Hopefully you will find everything to your liking but if not, based on the degree of your discontent, you can take the appropriate action.

3. Take note of children’s reaction to the nanny. If you discern any negative reaction to the nanny or any changes in your children in general do not disregard these signs. Vigilance and continuous observation is of the utmost importance. If the child can speak, have open conversations about how the child feels with regards to the nanny. If the child cannot speak, look at body language and emotional signals. Take everything seriously. Of course, many infants do have separation anxiety from their mother and many older children may feel angry about their mother leaving the home, so good common sense when coming to conclusion should prevail.

3. There are those who feel that the technical approach is best such as built-in surveillance cameras or audio equipment. It is a costly option that may not be extensive enough to catch every misdeed, but it may be the solution that seems the most accurate especially when an infant is involved.

I am glad to share my expertise with my clients, and I am happy to guide them through the interviewing process. Most placements are successful from the start but sometimes a change is necessary. It always comforts my clients to know that they have the agency to provide them with new applicants immediately and help with temporary coverage if need be. They can count on a supportive relationship throughout.

If you need a tandem or double stroller then one option would be to take a look at the Graco Duoglider double stroller. If you have not owned a Graco stroller before then one thing you can be sure about is that they are pretty reliable stroller. These strollers tend to be incredibly sturdy and pretty durable too.

With the Graco Duoglider it might not have all the unnecessary features you find on some strollers, but it does include all the essential features you do need to see you through those early years.

The Duoglider has been designed so that the two seats are in what they call a stadium style, where the rear seat is slightly higher than the front one, giving your child at the back a slightly better view than just staring at the back of the front seat. That’s not to say the child in the back will get a completely unblocked view, but the stadium style seating does help towards this. Removing the canopy off the front seat can also help too.

The rear seat also reclines completely flat which is a great feature for newborn babies or very small children and the rear canopy has a peek a boo screen incorporated into it, so you can keep an eye on your child while out strolling. The front seat does recline, although not completely flat like the rear seat, but enough for a small child to be comfortable or have a nap.

All double strollers need to be a certain size in order to cater for two children, but this common trait doesn’t seem to restrict the handling of the Duoglider. Graco which started out as a US company in Philadelphia has been around for over 60 years and they seem to have cracked this issue quite nicely. Our research found a lot of current owners of the Duoglider were amazed at how well this double stroller handles, even in tight spaces.

The Graco Duoglider also has a large storage area underneath the seats, however just beware that if the rear seat is fully reclined some owners has expressed that this can restrict the access they have to the storage space somewhat.

There is a tray on the front seat which is handy for keeping toys in or carrying drinks and snacks for your child, but there is no tray included on the rear seat, which would have been a nice accessory. The parents also have a tray incorporated into the handles of the stroller to.

One final observation is the pattern and color design of the Duoglider is quite neutral, so no matter what gender your child or children are, the color design would be good for them.

Many babies don’t like to do tummy time because it limits them to how much they can move around. Tummy time though, is an important part of their development because it exercises the muscles that will eventually help them crawl. So basically, while tummy time limits their mobility now, it will lead them to be more mobile later.

To help your baby get used to tummy time and actually enjoy it, you’ll have to be creative. You don’t want to have your baby cry every time you put him down on his stomach because they neither of you will want to do it.

Get on Your Tummy

Getting on your stomach right in front of him will help him focus on something other than the fact that he can’t move. You can make faces, sing him songs or sway back and forth. You’ll see how excited he will be to have some company on the floor with him.

Use Toys to Encourage Crawling

Get one of his favorite toys and place it right in front of him. Then tell him to come and get it. While he may not be able to itch himself over to the toy, he will try really hard and that is great. Always give him the toy after a little while so he doesn’t get discouraged or he will soon not like that game very much.

Give Him a Massage

When he is on his tummy, you can calm him by taking some lotion and rubbing his back. The special mommy or daddy time will be great for him and it will help him understand that being on his stomach isn’t as bad as he really feels that it is.

Give Him Something to Play

If you haven’t already, invest in a play mat. These mats help baby enjoy tummy time because they are brightly colored and have button on them that when pressed will play music. Your baby will have a great time hitting the buttons just to hear the music and will love to stare at the bright colors.

Start Small and Work Your Way Up

At first, your baby may not want to do tummy time at all. But if you are able to get him to be on his tummy time for at least a minute, you’ve done a good job. Try to increase the time he is on his belly every so often so that he can get used to it. By starting out with the least amount of time and building it up, he’ll start to get used to it and might not mind it as much.

You Do the Best You Can

Your baby will get his muscles worked out no matter how much time you place him on his belly. So do the best you can. If he stresses him and you out too much then just take breaks from time to time.

Always speak to your doctor if you believe there may be something wrong that could be making tummy time uncomfortable.

Everyone’s idea of a baby booster seat may different but you must understand the pros and cons to each chair before picking one or you might end up having to buy two. The best thing to do is make a list of the things that you are sure you are going to want in a booster chair. That way you can make the right choice for you and your little one. You may end up seeing that the chair that you originally thought you wanted may not be the best for your family.
