Jogging Strollers For Newborns – Be Careful
I’m a fit person. I jog, I go to the gym, eat right, the whole bit. To be honest it’s not always the most natural thing for me, it takes a lot of discipline, but I do enjoy it. Another thing that I thoroughly enjoy it taking my kids with me jogging. How do I do it? With great jogging strollers of course!
Jogging Strollers And Newborns Don’t Always Mix
Of course, when our first little one was born, I couldn’t wait to strap her into our shiny new Schwinn jogging stroller and hit the tarmac. After all, my wife wasn’t in any immediate condition to come jogging yet and I don’t particularly enjoy running alone. I don’t always run on just the pavement though, I usually hit the nature trails and old rail trails that are in and around our house. I find them to be much more fun.
So I thought taking our newborn jogging with me in the jogging stroller would be a good idea! As it turns out, this is not such a smart thing to do. After a brief discussion with my daughters pediatrician, I realized that this was not a good idea.
Jogging Is Great After About 6 Months
Little ones, before about 6 months, are not able to sit up on their own. Their little spines and muscles haven’t developed to the point that they can support their own weight. And if they can’t do that, they are vulnerable to all sorts of injuries to their neck, spine and so on.
Jog When They Can Sit Up On Their Own
The safest time to start jogging with your little on in the stroller is after they can sit up on their own. This is typically about 6 months or so. At this stage they will also enjoy it much more. They can look around, they can enjoy the music that you play for them and they can make enough noise to let you know if they are not enjoying something or are in discomfort.
You Can Take Them Out With You For A Long Time
The truth is those first 6 months fly by. There is no sense in jeopardizing your baby’s health at that stage. I take my kids with me until they basically don’t want to come anymore. My four year old still likes to come with me. My Schwinn can carry a child of at least 50 pounds which is fairly typical of jogging strollers. They can easily handle that.
So don’t be in too much of a rush to get your newborn out. But when they are ready, check with your doctor, then take them out with you. You will enjoy parenthood in a whole new way.
