Should You Buy A Disposable Or A Reusable Swim Nappy? Posted By : Charmine Ryan

In the last few years, the real nappy is increasingly popular among parents who are aware of environmental issues, and want to save money at the same time. This is not the case in the swim nappy segment. People think the only option they have is disposable swim nappies, which is false: there is a wide choice of real swim nappies. The dilemma of using disposable or real swim nappies is timely because baby swimming is becoming more and more popular, and by now every pool owner requires small children to wear swim nappy.

/>

LetÂ’s make a list of the pros and cons of real and disposable swim nappies. Disposable nappies are available in every store, and they can be used without any further preparation. On the other hand a real swim nappy needs more attention: the parents must check if it fits exactly on their child. The initial cost of a real nappy is also more compared to a disposable one. But used frequently, a real swim nappy is cheaper, and if cared for properly, it can be used for years. Disposable nappies come in bulky packages, so transportation may not be as simple. Real swim nappies take up less space in the trunk of the car.

There is also a growing concern about the impact of chemicals of disposable swim nappies. A real swim nappy is made of cotton or similar organic materials: they don’t contain any plastics or other chemicals, so there is no impact on the babies. There are many colors and styles available for real swim nappies: smaller toddlers will like the colorful ones with cartoon characters printed on them. Older children, who may feel embarrassed to wear a nappy, opt for plain swim nappy that look very much like a normal swim suit. Disposable nappies may be more practical than the real ones: most of them can be ripped open, while real nappies have to be pulled down – quite a hassle when the nappy is wet.

Oh Baby! Yeast Infection Symptoms in Infants

As if you didn’t have enough to think about already!

If your baby is a bit grizzly and has a pimply rash on its bottom that just won’t go away or has white spots in her mouth unfortunately these are signs that your bub is suffering from a baby yeast infection.

What causes a baby yeast infection?

There are four ways that a yeast infection can be caused in babies;

1) Via the birth canal;

If Mom has a yeast infection in her urinary tract then there is a good chance that baby will pick it up as it is going through the birth canal.

2) When drinking from Mom;

If Mom has a Candida outbreak then it is possible that she will transmit the infection to baby while feeding. Baby can also pass the infection back to Mom this way.

3) Cleanliness;

One of the great things about modern diapers is that they are designed to be leak-proof. It is this feature that means that parents often tend to leave diapers on for longer than they should - I know that I did! Unfortunately the damp, warm environment created is ideal for the fungi to thrive in. When changing diapers try and wipe from front to back - especially for girls. When bathing take care to clean the lower area thoroughly.

4) Medication;

There are loads of children who have to take antibiotics, some from the time that they are born. Unfortunately these are a ‘necessary evil’ and will only be prescribed if absolutely essential. They do come with their own set of minor side effects, one of which is that baby may become more susceptible to a baby yeast infection. If your baby does need to go on antibiotics then ask your health care provider about a specialist infant probiotic.

Mothers that are on antibiotics also face the same risk so don’t neglect to take extra precautions and supplements.

If the rash that your baby has is treated and gets noticeably better by the next diaper change, then there is a good chance that you have not dealt with a baby yeast infection, but if it continues to get worse, spreads to cover the genitals and lower tummy or takes on a scalloped edge with or without small white spots, then there is a good chance that Candida is the cause.

Any sign of white spots in the mouth or any rash that does not clear up should be checked out by a medical professional.

What next?

Your doctor will be able to tell you immediately whether your baby has a baby yeast infection or not. He may take a small sample of the skin - it is just a wee scrape, baby won’t even feel it - and send it off to the lab for testing. If this comes back positive he will probably prescribe an anti-fungal medicine.

Things that you can do to relieve your baby yeast infection symptoms.

  • There are many home remedies for the relief of baby yeast infection symptoms, from the use of tea tree oil (very diluted - 1 drop to 2 litres of water), to colloidal silver, to cinnamon oil, yogurt or cider vinegar.
  • Aloe Vera gel or a cool damp chamomile tea bag pressed to the area may also relieve her symptoms.
  • Changing the diaper more regularly than usual and having ‘bare bum time’ will help the area to breathe and heal as well as helping to prevent a Candida overgrowth.

If you or bub end up with a Candida infection, please ensure that you do seek medical advice and that you treat it quickly and thoroughly. By doing this now, you will potentially save yourself and your baby a lot of pain in the future.

Did you know that up to 95% of people who treat their Yeast Infection by conventional methods actually end up with a recurrent infection? So what are your other options? Well, you could try to ignore it and watch your list of symptoms dramatically increase or you can try a baby yeast infection treatment that has been known to start working in just 12 hours. Twin or Tandem, which double pushchair, is for me? Posted By : Meg Thompson

As a mother of two young children of similar ages, you may find that simple tasks take double the amount of time to complete. Going shopping, short family outings or visits to the zoo all become much more stressful. Though there are several ways to make these situations easier. You could hire a helper; this may take a lot of pressure off of you, but it also lightens your wallet. Alternatively you could try using a baby harness; though few people like to use these because they look and work similar to dog leashes, and canÂ’t be used on very young infants. The last and most realistic option would be to invest in a double pushchair. With this device youÂ’ll be able to keep an eye on your loved ones and have a place for them to rest when they get tired of moving about.

/>

There are a huge variety of double pushchairs on the market today; each has its own advantages and disadvantages. Those of you that have never considered buying one of these strollers, then the amount of options available to you may seem a little overwhelming at first. Here are some tips to help you narrow down your choice.

The 2 main double pushchair styles

There are two standard styles of double pushchair available to you; the ‘Tandem pushchair and Twin Pushchair’ the difference lies in their design. The tandem chair is built with the seats of the stroller one in front of the other, while the twin chair has its seats side by side. It’s best to use your own personal judgement when deciding between these two double pushchair designs and imagine which style your children would enjoy best. The twin chair would give your babies the freedom to interact with each other all the time, this may seem a plus, but could also be negative especially if your children don’t particularly get along.

The most important quality to be aware of is the size and weight of the stroller. The double pushchair is always going to be heavier than a single one, but you want to be able to lift it your self and be able to fit it into your car or cupboard. ItÂ’s a good idea to open the chair up and close it, to check that it is easy to use. Give it a little spin around the shopping center before buying it just to make sure that you have sufficient control of it.

Quality and comfort come first

When buying for your loved ones it is always best to find a double pushchair of good quality. There are several good quality brands of pushchair out there that are priced quite low; you just have to find them. ItÂ’s a good idea to search the Internet for possibilities, as some sites will compare product prices and features for you.

Strollers- Which Kind Is Best? Posted By : Naomi Williams

There are so many different types of strollers out there it is hard to know what kind is right. Do you get something lightweight or heavier, an umbrella stroller or a jogging stroller? Well, here is a basic list of the different types of baby strollers.

/>

Umbrella Stroller
An umbrella stroller has curved double handles and they fold up easily and compactly, like an umbrella; hence the name. These are the smallest and lightest baby strollers available. They can have a cloth or vinyl seat on a basic frame with swivel wheels. Some offer features such as a canopy and a storage basket. This is a great stroller for short trips where you donÂ’t need to bring a lot of stuff with you. But beware; they are not as sturdy as other strollers and donÂ’t offer the same safety features. They are also not meant for children less than 6 months or children unable to sit unassisted in an upright position.

Lightweight Strollers
Lightweight strollers are mid-sized strollers that can be very basic or come with many features. There is an abundant selection of lightweight strollers, so make sure you know what your needs are before you begin to shop around. Lightweight strollers are meant for basic baby transportation like shopping, walking on paved sidewalks, etc. They are not meant for all terrain, running, or jogging. These strollers are more comfortable and practical than umbrella strollers and there is a huge selection of models and styles. There are lots of them that come with many different practical features such as a canopy, cup holders and extra storage space. Many of them may work with an infant car seat, meaning you can put the car seat in the stroller and they have good durability.

Travel System Stroller
Stroller travel systems are the ultimate in convenience for a parent with a newborn because they include the car seat, stroller, and a car seat base. They are the combination of a good-sized stroller, with an infant carrier that buckles in and out. If you are planning on only buying one stroller, this would be great because they work from birth to toddlerhood. They also have many features available like a cup holder and extra storage space. However, be aware that the weight is considered too heavy by some and the lower quality of some of these may lead you to buy something else after your baby has outgrown their infant car seat. They are also not suitable for rough terrain, running, or jogging.

Jogging and All-Terrain Strollers
These strollers are heavy duty strollers that can come with many features. More and more parents are using jogging strollers to get out of the house and exercise. A true jogging stroller is meant for serious running and has 3 large inflatable tires, with a fixed front tire. Jogging strollers are built for speed, not handling. Trying to use them for other activities such as shopping may lead to frustration and disappointment.

All-Terrain Strollers, which are also called sport strollers or sport utility strollers, are great for walking on or off paved roads. They are very durable and can handle most terrains. They also can fit through most doorways and are pretty easy to use. They can be difficult to turn if the front wheel doesnÂ’t swivel, so you may want one with a front wheel that has the ability to turn.

Double Strollers
These strollers are great for multiple kids. Depending on the type of double stroller you get, some can accommodate an infant car seat. They can have many features and the high quality ones are pretty easy to maneuver. On the other hand, they are quite bulky and harder to carry around.

You just need to decide what you will be using the stroller for most and what features you would like. I would make a list of the most important things that you want in a stroller and go from there. You also have to realize that you might not be able to get a stroller with all the features that you want, so decide what is most important to you and your family.

The Many Benefits of the Electric Breast Pump Posted By : astratta

Many new mothers would like to give the nutrition of pure breast milk to their newborn babies, but unfortunately many women have trouble breastfeeding. These troubles range from inverted nipples, to the baby not latching properly. For whatever reason, electric breast pumps could possibly be a priceless addition to your baby items. They can be a fabulous alternative to breastfeeding directly from your breasts, and still provide the infant the breast milk he or she deserves.

/>

Electric Breast Pumps

There are two types of breasts pumps on the market – manual and electric/battery-operated. They both function well, but the electric pump functions better. Electric breast pumps are usually more pricey, but they have certain advantages over the manual breast pumps.

Advantages of an Electric Breast Pump

Many lactation specialists and hospitals recommend using electric breast pumps simply because they are capable of extracting the breast milk more efficiently. They work fast, and free up your hand that you would have been using to pump the breast milk with the manual version.

The low-end electric breast pumps are quite affordable – around $65. These pumps are fantastic for using occasionally, and are usually semi-automatic. You will usually be able to moderate the number of pumps per minute, and the strength of the suction. The only disadvantage is that the single pumps allow you to only pump one breast at a time. Also, the batteries on these pumps tend to drain quickly. The battery function doesn’t pump as solidly as when you are using an adapter.

Mid-range electric breast pumps have more advantages than the low-end models. Although they are more expensive, many of these pumps have an adjustable suction. Lots of them feature double pumps so you can pump both breasts at the same time, and they are highly portable.

The high-end types are the most expensive, but are very convenient and efficient. A variety of them are hospital-grade, and are what many working moms who need something that pumps quickly and efficiently. You can pump both breasts at the same time, which saves time in pumping. Cycle times are speedy, and many of these models are discreet. The newer pumps have come up with a technology that mimics the infant’s natural sucking quite closely, thereby extracting breast milk more competently.

Of course, many pumps can be a bit noisy, and can be a somewhat uncomfortable and painful. The more expensive types try to make the action of these pumps less painful, but it is inevitable that engorged breasts will be a little delicate, even to the softest touch.

What to Look For in a Pump

The best electric breast pumps should be highly portable so that you can pump even when you are out and about. They should feature sucking actions that can be adjusted, so that you can change the intensity of the extraction of the breast milk and tugging on the nipples. The breast shield sizes should also be adjustable, since all women have varying sizes and shapes of breasts. If you want to save time, look for the types that feature two pumps so you can extract both breasts simultaneously.

Electric breast pumps can be a alternative to breastfeeding directly. You can still nourish your newborn with healthy breast milk, while being free to pump whenever you can. By pumping your milk and bottle feeding, even dad can feed the baby when mommy is busy!

4 Must Have Products That Will Keep Your Child Safe Around The Home Posted By : Vicky Mawan Trorik

About 2-1/2 million children are injured or killed by hazards in the home each year which is extremely unfortunate because this shouldn’t happen. Most of these deaths can be prevented by applying a few simple child safety devices in your home that are available on the market today.

/>

So here is a list of four safety devices to incorporate today:

1. Safety Latches and Locks: This is the most obvious. Child proofing your home these days is very easy. You can go to a local hardware/dept. store and pick up inexpensive latches and locks for cabinets, drawers in kitchens, bathrooms, and other areas that your little one can gain access to.

Make sure these latches are sturdy enough to withstand pulls and tugs from your child. Some times they can be very determined. With the typical safety latch or lock around $2.00, it’s a low cost way to tackle the biggest safety issue.

2. Safety Gates: I suppose if you live in a single story home with no basement, then having a safety gate might not be high on your list of safety equipment to buy, but with that said, there might be a room or area in your home that might have hazards in them. So it’s always good to have a couple of safety gates that you can use in this case. Look for safety gates that children cannot dislodge easily, but that you’ll be able and close without difficulty.

If you’re placing a gate at the top of stairs, make sure to purchase one that screws into the wall vs using a “pressure gate”. It’s too risky.

The typical cost of a safety gate can range between $13 to $40.

3. Door Knob Covers/Door Locks: To prevent children from entering rooms and other areas with possible dangers (like swimming pools). Door knob covers and door locks are important.

Be sure the door knob cover is sturdy enough not to break, but still allows you to open a door quickly in case of emergency. By restricting access to potentially
hazardous rooms in the home, door knob covers could help prevent many kinds of injuries. On average, door knob covers cost around a buck and door locks go from $5
and up.

4. Anti-Scald Devices: These devices can help prevent burns because they’ll regulate your water temperature. Way too many kids get burned for no reason simply because the water was too hot coming out of faucets and shower heads.

The typical cost of an anti-scald device: $6 to $30.

So there you have it! Now although the above 4 items are important to have in place to protect your child, there are actually 9 more “must have” safety items which are just as important. Listing them here would take more room then we have, so I recommend that you read the full baby safety article accessed below.

Be Safe!
