When it comes to naming their babies, some parents like to stay with tradition. This means nothing that is too different such as Nevaeh, which is “heaven” spelled backwards, or a name such as “Ziggy.” This simply means sticking to the more traditional names that include “Michael” and “Thomas.”

Some individuals like to stay with tradition when naming a child after a parent or grandparent. There is also the fact that the most traditional names are the strongest of names. It is always good to evaluate every angle of a name because that child will be starting school someday and the child does have to live with the name for the rest of their life.

So it is up to you whether you want to choose a traditional baby name or one that is a little more on the modern side. There are modern baby names that are strong and to the point. They don’t have strange pronunciations or weird spellings. When choosing a name, these are things to look at.

With traditional, there is not really any room for guessing with a name. However, you may choose to stay with a traditional name but choose a different spelling. Traditional does not mean you do not have some room for creativity. You can be as creative as you want. If you stay traditional with the first name, have some fun with the middle name. Just make sure everything fits.

For most people, the presence of a new human life normally brings with it the insanity of buying new things; unnecessary things that most parents will never use, including baby shoes for the legendary “walking-baby”, knee pads for babies that can’t quite walk, but do crawl “an extraordinary amount” and the infamous diaper genie repository; a repository into which one can put dirty nappies before removing them and putting them in the bin…which one was probably about to do anyway.
But never fear; these may be icebergs in the sea of useless and overpriced baby products, but there are also some genuinely useful lifeboat-products drifting around out there as well.   

One such lifeboat is the baby changing bag – a bag specially designed with baby-needs in mind.  Although you could technically use any old bag to carry around your baby-stuff, the advantages to proper baby changing bags are obvious to anybody who has tried dealing with babies before; the large and accessible pockets that keep dirty nappies separate from clean clothes; the instantly deployable changing mat for unexpected changings; the wipe-clean interior that makes cleaning up the inevitable mess as swift as possible; the insulated bottle pocket to keep food and drink cool or warm – need I go on?

As a mother of three, I only discovered nappy changing bags the second time round and, let me tell you, they make a huge difference to day-to-day life!  Whilst they cannot work miracles, baby changing bags do make it much easier to organise yourself and your baby, offering a rare peace of mind that is hard to maintain whilst fumbling for the talc!  Nowadays, as a midwife and parental advisor, I always advise new parents and veterans alike to invest in a good quality changing bag; they come in a variety of shapes and sizes, from small day bags for older babies to large hold-alls that can handle everything your baby could ever need, changing bags are available in a host of modern and classic designs so as not to compromise your style too much.  

However, if you are thinking of buying yourself or somebody else one of these bags, it is worth paying some attention to the type of material that it is made from.  Shockingly, a recent study from the Centre for Environmental Health in the USA found safety-standard defying levels of lead in 10% of vinyl changing pads from changing bags that they tested!  As such, it may be worth steering your purchase towards woven or recycled changing bags, avoiding the vinyl altogether!  The chances of anything too nasty coming from having a changing pad with over 600 lead parts per million are very slim but hey, in the case of babies there’s little point messing around when the safer option is probably just as efficient and the same price!

Baby strollers come in many formats, sizes, price ranges from under $100 to over a $1000, you heard right, over a thousand. Should you spend that much for a children’s stroller? For those of you who want the very best and are willing to pay the price, surprisingly, there is a good selection available. The expensive strollers cater to a market that is looking for more unique features that can’t be found on other strollers, the more unique the better. A unique feature of the Stokke is that you can convert the stroller to a high chair, just how easy that is could be a blessing or a hindrance, a great convenience when dining out. Most of these expensive strollers are not storage friendly, most don’t don’t fold easily and take up quite a bit of room in a car trunk, backseat, in a van or an SUV. They are not the lightweight “umbrella” type of baby carriers with the one hand easy fold feature. Spending $1000 to have one of these strollers is a very individual decision, if you have just one child and no more planned, from my point of view that is expensive. If on the other hand you have other children who can use the stroller and more planned then the expensive stroller could represent a good value.

The process of taking an ordinary vinyl baby doll and converting it into a reborn doll is called reborning. This process is a work fit for an artist, as the doll ceases to look like a doll, and takes on a realistic life-like appearance of a baby. Everything from the color, the skin, the eyes, nails and so on, is crafted in detail so as to look exactly like the real thing. Different doll artists have their own processes and techniques, to give that realistic look, and to make everyone feel as though the doll is alive.

The first thing to look into is the appearance of the skin, in a reborn doll. Usually a vinyl baby doll is taken and the factory paint is totally scraped off, or a reborn doll kit provides the unassembled doll without any color on it. The inside of each part is coated with a purple or blue color, so as to give it an appearance, of skin undertone of a real baby. The outside is carefully coated with different combinations of paint and oils to give it the correct translucent skin tone. There are various techniques to do this and each doll maker, employs his own secret way. Certain other effects have to be added to make the skin look more real, such as veins and so on. The blotching and spots are also added, so that it totally resembles the skin of a newborn baby.

Choosing and fixing the right hair is a laborious and time consuming task, in reborning. Mohair or human hair is usually chosen. A soft and shiny variety is chosen to resemble baby’s hair. The artist also sees that he puts the correct amount of hair that is usually found on a baby’s scalp. Too much of it and it will look quite unreal. Each strand of hair is fixed by using rooting tools and felting needles, so that it does not look as though you have just stuck a tuft of hair with glue. This technique of rooting, is what makes the hair on the reborn doll look so realistic. This process can take more than 30 hours per head.

A lot of planning and craftsmanship goes into making the face of the doll, look realistic. The baby’s eyes play a major role in crafting the face and its expression. There are different dolls with different expressions and all look real, because of the care taken in choosing the right eyes and skin wrinkles around the nose. If the eyes are closed then lot of attention goes into creating the perfect eyelids and eyelashes.

Nowadays new methods are employed, to not just make the appearance look realistic, but also the feel of the reborn doll. With the latest technology you can make the doll feel warm to touch, just as you would feel the warmth of a human baby, in your hands. Certain devices are inserted which will give the doll a realistic sounding heartbeat and certain body movements.

Social skills difficulties sneak up on most parents. Suddenly the child who had played alongside the other kids is now feeling isolated and unable to make friends.

This happens because of how quickly social interactions change once a child moves out of toddler-hood. While being able to take turns was once enough, now the child must be able to:

- Grasp the nuances of both verbal and non-verbal language.

- Distinguish between literal and non-literal language.

And while we take it for granted, this is not an easy thing to do.

The worst part of the whole thing is that these children want to make friends. They just do not know how to make or keep friends.

Why Your Child Just Doesn’t Get Social Skills

Parents often tell me it is hard to understand why their child “just doesn’t get it”. One reason is because their child is unable to learn social skills through experience like other children. Instead, he must be taught.

While not limited to them, social skills difficulties are key components to learning, language and Autism Spectrum disorders. Unfortunately the research shows that few of these children are getting the help they need.

The consequences of this are devastating. Children who have trouble socially are at greater risk of suffering from anxiety, depression, substance abuse and social isolation. They are also at greater risk of being bullied since they are unable to pick up on social cues.

The One Thing You Should NOT Do If Your Child Is Experiencing Social Skills Difficulties

Many parents get frustrated when they place their children in settings with other children who have good social skills. They hope that their child will learn from their peers, but since their child is unable to pick up on social cues they don’t.

While this environment is important to practice new skills, it is NOT the place to learn these skills. Everything moves too quickly and sets the child up for failure.

It also risks them being misunderstood by the other children and adults. This leads them to being labeled the “weird”, “mean” or “bad” kid. For example a child who’s overly blunt may be prone to hurt another child’s feelings without meaning to. Even though he does not understand what he is doing wrong he may get in trouble. Unfortunately, when children are given these negative labels they often feel it is their responsibility to live up to them.

For example, there is a little boy I know well whom I will call Brian. Brian is an active little boy with some attention and sensory issues. Brian is also a very bright boy who doesn’t miss a thing.

One day when Brian was doing something he should not be doing I asked him why he was doing it. He replied, “Because I am Brian”.

I shared this comment with his parents who now work hard at avoiding negative labels. However, while we can control the labels given to our children in our own homes, we cannot control how they are labeled outside of our homes.

What You Should Do If Your Child Has Social Skill Problems

Unfortunately social skills problems do not go away by themselves. As social situations become more complex social skill difficulties become more obvious. That means that without appropriate social skills training, children who have trouble socially will have more and more problems as they get older.

The best thing to do for your child is to work on these skills early. This will help your child effectively interact with his peers.

Do not push these needs aside until they become overly apparent. If you feel your child is at risk, or is having difficulty making friends, get help.

As I mentioned earlier, children with autism spectrum disorders as well as learning disabilities have social skills deficits as a central feature of their disorder. If this is your child, these needs should be addressed automatically. There is no reason to wait.

How Waiting to Get Social Skills Help For Your Child Only Complicates the Situation.

A mom from Nevada recently contacted me and said that her “very smart 11 year old daughter loves school” however, “she has kids she knows and will talk to, but no real friends. She cries at night and doesn’t want to go to recess or lunch at school.”

I wish I could say such stories are uncommon, but they are not. A Westchester mom recently said of her daughter “All I want is for her to have at least “one” friend so that she does not hate school and she is not so lonely.”

I hear these stories every day. For 15 years I have worked with children who have these challenges in their lives. However, it is still hard for me to see children who are unable to make or keep friends.

At a recent health fair, I met a mother who told me that her son who is on the autistic spectrum said, “Mom, I always feel like there is something I am missing and I just don’t know what it is.”

What he is missing are the nuances of social interactions. While most of us are able to learn them without assistance, some cannot. Fortunately with the help that is available today these children are able to improve their social skills and have friends. No child should be a lonely child.

Let’s take action today and help our children overcome their social skills difficulties. Our children are depending on us!

They say that potty training boys is more difficult and can take longer than training girls. I have to say that I do sit on the fence a bit with that statement. Personally I cannot talk from experience - I have 2 girls both of whom potty trained very quickly and easily. I do however, have many friends who have boys and the consensus of opinion is very much divided. Some potty trained very quickly and without fuss and others had their parents pulling their hair out. So why do some boys take such a long time?
